The most prestigious international soccer competition in the world, the Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup is held every four years and invites nations from around the globe to compete for the world championship title of soccer. This competition was originally held in 1930 in Uruguay and included participation from 13 soccer teams hailing from North and South America and Europe. Uruguay was the first winner of the world cup of soccer.
The second soccer world cup competition of 1934 was held in Italy, and France hosted the third in 1938. By 1950, the competition moved to South America and was held in Brazil, a country that has claimed more world cup soccer championships than any other in the world. Brazil is the only nation to have competed in all of the soccer world cups since the inception of the competition and has scored more goals than any other country’s team. Italy and Argentina have also won the cup on more than one occasion. Most recently, France won the championship in 2018 in Russia.
